I spent last week with my 11 year old daughter at a table tennis training program conducted by the Australian national head coach. 6 hours per day for 5 days including an opportunity for Zara to have a hit with Olympian David Powell.
The 40 kids there were amazing. They listened to and followed instructions, they kept going when it was tough, they practiced what they were taught, they turned up when they were tired, they helped each other and played without fear of losing a point or making a mistake. They all understood and adopted the philosophy that “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t make” and they played attacking table tennis.
They were also aware that age is not a barrier with one of the girls just missing out on Olympic selection the previous weekend!
We could all benefit from the same approach:
– Invest time in self improvement
– Seek opportunities to learn from the best and practice
– Play without fear of failure
– Keep turning up
– Help each other
