Our history

We have been working with small business owners for 14 years creating a business that works for them rather than the other way around. We started small – from a garage – but our passion couldn’t be contained within just four small brick walls. We are now helping businesses across the country with offices in Hobart and in Devonport.

About us

We are privately owned and lead by our director, Craig Badcock. He reluctantly admits to being an accountant, but you wouldn’t pick it otherwise! Founding his first accounting firm when he was 27, he eventually came to the conclusion that working in a normal accounting firm was no fun. Addressing this, he sold his share and founded Unicorn Business Solutions in 2000.

He has sourced a diverse team of sales experts, number crunchers, tech gurus, cloud entrepreneurs, marketing geniuses, wealth creators and business coaches so that our clients have the full package.

About you

We’re exclusive (sorry!). We don’t want to be everything to everyone and so we have a client selection criteria we call SPORTIEST. It means those businesses that are Small, Privately Owned, Repeatable, Takes Advice, Independent, Established, Services or Trades.

Don’t worry too much if your business doesn’t fit all of these, they’re more guidelines than hard rules. The most important thing is our ability to add value to your business, which is why we developed this criteria.

Small means 5 – 20 employees
Most businesses with under 5 employees may have family working for them or a couple of casuals and over 20 means they may have internal departments who we compete with. We add the most value to businesses who have between 5 – 20 employees. There are issues around management, culture, skills & training and HR that we can then help with.

Privately Owned means you are the owner
We work primarily with the owners of small businesses rather than their managers.Repeatable means you deal with multiple customers delivering similar things again and again
Businesses with multiple customers are less vulnerable and more complex. Multiple customers create more avenues for us to increase the business’ revenue.

Takes advice
In order for us to provide value, our clients need to be able to accept our direction, be open to change, and act on what we agree to do. Without this basic fundemental, we cannot be effective for our clients.

Independent means no franchisees
Franchisees usually have limited ability to change. This limits the amount of value we can add to the business.

Established means you have been in business for a minimum of 2 years
2 years is enough time to have the business established in the industry and less risk of failing as a start up. Around this time, the owner is generally starting to experience issues with time, management, marketing, or finance – and we can create significant value for them in this area.

Services or Trades
We deal mostly with tradies and service based businesses including wholesale and retailers. We tend not to work with farmers as their contractual arrangements, legal agreements and/or family commitments limit the amount of value we can add to the business.

Your Biggest Expense Is The Cost Of The Lost Opportunity

Unlike other accountants, we understand that your biggest expense doesn't appear on your profit and loss statement. It is the cost of the lost opportunity. And without accurate figures each month there are poor decisions and lots of lost opportunities.

We Are Upfront

Everything we do is priced upfront so that there are no surprises. We do not charge by the hour – we believe it is not ethical for you to pay more if your accountant is slower.
